I’m a huge fan of ffmpeg, as you know from my previous posts about it. Before this day, i always used one of my linux boxes or virtual machines to use ffmpeg. Not anymore! I found a way to get ffmpeg on your mac very easily.

1. Download the FFMPEGX package from here.

2. Mount the disk image (.dmg file).

3. Right Click The FFMPEGX app in the dmg file, and click ‘Show Contents’.

4. Navigate to
'Contents' > 'Resources'
.

5. Copy the ‘ffmpeg’ program, paste it into your Applications folder.

6. Boom! Ready to go! Try typing
/Applications/ffmpeg
in your terminal. For other commands, check my previous posts about ffmpeg.

Attention: the ‘
libmp3lame
‘ encoder does not exist in the OSX version, use ‘
mp3
‘ instead.

That’s it Happy Encoding!
Regards,

Not so long ago, i updated one of my previous posts on ffmpeg with a line on how to record your favourite internet stream to disk with ffmpeg.

Actually that line doesn’t really work well if you want to record a show that’s on the radio every week, on a given day and a given time. People familiar with cron, the unix schedule program, will know you can just give it some coordinates, and it will run your comments at certain intervals. So i tried feeding that particular command to cron, but cron always failed to record my show, because ffmpeg generates way too much output. I found a workaround for that too, by redirecting all output to
/dev/null
.

How to do it?
(for Mac OSX or any GNU/Linux distro with cron and ffmpeg installed)
1. Determine the ffmpeg command you wish to schedule. Maybe my other posts about ffmpeg can help you.
e.g.:
ffmpeg -i http://mp3.streampower.be/stubru-high.mp3 -f mp3 -acodec libmp3lame -ab 128k -ar 44100 -t 02:00:00 /home/toon/Desktop/stubru.mp3

2. Open a terminal window and type this to open your crontab file in a easy editor:

EDITOR=nano crontab -e

3. Determine the 5 crontab schedule numbers to tell cron when to execute your command (1: minute, 2: hour, 3: day of the month, 4: month, 5: day of the week with 0 for sunday). You can use wildcards
(*)
if you want any digit to be okay, lists
(,)
, or ranges
(-)
. For more info, check this reference.
I want to record every sunday at 19:00h, so for me it’s

0 19 * * 0

4. Insert those in the editor, then insert your command (devide everything with spaces).
When that is done, we still need to add the magical string to make crontab and ffmpeg work together. So type another space, and add this to the end of the crontab line:
> /dev/null 2>&1
. For me the result looks like this:

0 19 * * 0 ffmpeg -i http://mp3.streampower.be/stubru-high.mp3 -f mp3 -acodec libmp3lame -ab 128k -ar 44100 -t 02:00:00 /home/toon/Desktop/stubru.mp3 > /dev/null 2>&1

5. Press
Ctrl+O
and
Ctrl+X
to save and quit the Nano editor.

6. Enjoy Your Scheduled Recordings!

After installing Trisquel 5.0 GNU/Linux, i noticed the sweet GNOME theme they made stops working 1 minute or so after Logging in. You just see some standard GNOME icons, panels and menus, and all the beautiness of the interface is gone.

I thought that really sucked, so a few weeks ago i started looking around for a solution. Of course i found one the same day.

The menus and GNOME panels can be fixed by relaunching gnome-settings-daemon. Open a terminal and type this:

sudo gnome-settings-daemon

After this your desktop icons will still look terrible. Fix them by force restarting nautilus.

killall nautilus

That’s it, you’re back to that beautiful Trisquel GNU/Linux Desktop

Yesterday, Firefox was giving me headaches.
I was just working away, with 20 or more tabs open. Suddenly the browser just quit and shouted out a warning message to tell me it crashed. When i tried to relaunch it, the ‘restore tabs’ window showed, and the browser crashed again two seconds after that. This behaviour was repeated everytime i restarted Firefox, even after a reboot of OSX.

I grew tired of trying and googled if Firefox had a safe mode, and YES! it has one.
On Mac OSX, start Firefox while holding the
alt
or
option
button.
On GNU/Linux, open a terminal and type
firefox -safe-mode

You’ll get a window giving you some options. i chose ‘disable add-ons’.
(this also works on the free browser ‘Abrowser’ on Trisquel GNU/Linux)

After some goofing around, it seemed there was an error in the ‘HTTPS Everywhere’ add-on, i uninstalled it, and everything was back to normal. Installed the add-on again, and it still works.

Great! another problem solved…
Thanks Mozilla, for building a Safe Mode into your applications

Lately i was tinkering a bit on my local area network. These are the commands i used (they will work on Mac OSX as well as on GNU/Linux):

ifconfig

- to see/edit network interface settings

ping www.example.com

- to see if a host is reachable, and with how much latency. www.example.com can also be replaced by an ip address.

traceroute www.example.com

- to see which and how many hops are between you and the server you’re pinging.

netstat

- show network status (initiated connections)

lsof -i

- show open network sockets

tcpdump -i en0 -w capturefile.pcap -s0

- capture all network traffic on the en0 interface, save in capturefile.pcap. without the -w option, you can monitor the data live.

arp -a

- list all hosts on the local network, currently seen by your client, with ip and MAC addresses

nslookup www.example.com

- do a dns request for www.example.com

ssh user@hostname

- login to a remote host via a secure shell

scp user@hostname:/home/user/example.txt /home/me/Desktop/

scp /home/me/Desktop/example2.txt user@hostname:/home/user/

- copy the file example.txt on the remote host to my desktop on the local client over ssh.
- copy the file example2.txt on the local machine to the remote host over ssh.

that’s it for now

Lately, i was writing a class in php, and i wanted to test it from the command line. In the same file i wrote the class in, i put this:

$test = new Test();

that’s the default way to do this in php. What’s not so interesting about this, is that when you want to use the class in another project and you include the file, the class will automatically be called, because that piece of code is in there. So you’ll have to edit your file again.

That’s not what i wanted.

What i want is to make the class file detect if it’s being included/required or not, and act in a correct manner: if the file is not included by another file the class should be called automatically, when it is included though, it should not, so that the project that includes the class can do whatever they want with it. And i want all of this without ever having to change the code in the class file.

The following code does just that:

//initiate the class if we're not included by another php file
if (basename(__FILE__) == basename($_SERVER['PHP_SELF'])) {
$test = new Test();
//you can put other code here, e.g:
$test->monkey();
}

it compares the basename of the __FILE__ constant, with the basename of the $_SERVER['PHP_SELF'] environment variable. __FILE__ always returns the name of the real file in which it is called, while PHP_SELF returns the path of the file that was directly called by the user (so if it’s called in a file that’s being included, it returns the path of the parent file). If both are the same, the file is not included or required by another file, so the class should be called.

That’s all

Just wanted to add some things to my previous post.
As you could already read, i’m trying to survive using Windows OS while developing. I’m doing this by installing as much Free Software (Free as in Speech AND as in Beer) as i need to do my job.

This week i had to install some extra software packages to survive Windows Hell.

First off with two Firefox Add-Ons.
Firebug, the ultimate DOM/CSS inspector and javascript tool for web developers using firefox. It comes in handy for example when you’re trying to write CSS stylesheets for complicated websites.

Next up, also comes in handy when writing CSS: a color picker for the browser. ColorZilla is what i used. it’s not a very sleek looking tool but it does a good job picking colors

Also, for all my image editing needs, i installed the GIMP, my favourite image editing tool. As you can tell from this list: i was doing a lot of graphical things this week, which i don’t really enjoy, but it’s part of the job.

Last but not least: i needed a packet inspector, so i downloaded WireShark, the most detailed graphical packet inspector out there.

That’s how i survived this week (along with all items from my last post)
(all of these also work on gnu/linux and mac osx systems)

regards

I recently started working as php developer for a small/medium-sized media company. Everything is really fine there, except for one thing. They give their developers computers with Windows installed on them. I’ll try and document here what programs i installed to survive this hell. You’ll notice i like to keep things simple (and i really really like to use Free Software).

- First thing I did was to completely update the Operating System. That way i don’t have to worry about outdated browsers, uncompatible dll’s etcetera. It’s Windows Vista, so i just did Windows Update and that was it.

- Next step: a decent browser. I installed Firefox 4 because i really enjoy using it on Mac OSX and GNU/Linux. I usually use a lot of browser add-ons. More about that later. When Firefox was installed, i naturally made it my standard browser, and i removed all desktop shortcuts and such for Explorer.

- You can’t Code without an Editor. Notepad is not an option. So i went for Gedit, from the GNOME project. It’s a really neat and simple editor, it has code-highlighting, and a few other handy options for programming. Also i activated the gedit-plugin ‘File Browser Pane’, to have a filebrowser inside of the editor, like many IDE’s have. On Linux i’d also activate the Terminal pane, but that’s not possible on the Windows version of Gedit. I also installed my own Gedit theme, which is a tweaked version of the default Oblivion theme.

- next up is an FTP program. At the company they use SFTP so i was looking for a decent FTP program. Where many people would’ve chosen FileZilla, i choose FireFTP. It’s a Firefox browser add-on, and works great. It has all features i need. And it runs in my browser, so the integration with it is fantastic (upload->view on the web == WIN!)

- So far, so good. Communication in the office happens by e-mail, for which they have a Microsoft Exchange server. I downloaded Thunderbird, and set it up to work with it. Great.

- I needed an SSH client, so i installed FireSSH, another great Firefox browser add-on which provides everything i need from SSH.

- For Quick Scripting: the GreaseMonkey browser add-on for Firefox.

- And lastly (too bad) i needed a PDF reader and Flash Player and Quicktime, and that’s why i installed Adobe Reader X, Adobe Flash Player and Quicktime.

- time to get rid of the ugly Windows Vista desktop background.

I’ll survive like this, but i’d so much rather have a Mac or a GNU/Linux box to work on

This is a difficult issue for some new Mac OSX users. They have their external HD drives, formatted in NTFS, and when they plug it into their mac, they find they don’t have write access to the drive. You can easily solve this without having to install third party software. (at your own risk)

1. Open a terminal, and type this

diskutil info /Volumes/**THE NAME OF YOUR DRIVE**

where you change **THE NAME OF YOUR DRIVE** to the actual name of your HD drive (or usb stick…)

2. You will get a whole list of info on that drive. Look for “Volume UUID”, and copy the corresponding value.

3. backup the file
/etc/fstab
if it exists on your system by typing

sudo cp /etc/fstab /etc/fstab.backup

4. edit the fstab file with ‘nano’
sudo nano /etc/fstab

5. insert
UUID=
and then the value you copied from step 2. after that press space, and type
none ntfs rw
you must see something like this:

UUID=123-456-789 none ntfs rw

6. save, exit nano, reboot system.

ctrl+o (=save)
ctrl+x (=quit nano)

now check if it works… and it will
that’s it!

I ran into some problems lately with my network. Whenever i was browsing the web, my Firefox would just not load some pages, mostly pages that i visited quite often (Wikipedia, Apple Trailers, …). I tried Safari because i thought the problem was one of the add-ons or plugins in Firefox, but Safari also failed. Could this be a problem with my operating system (Mac OSX 10.5) ? I tried bridged networking from a Ubuntu virtual machine. Seemed to work. Other computers on the network had no problems (all windooz and GNU/Linux machines).

After countless hours of searching on google, changing network cables, restarting router and switches over the past weeks, i desperately went to the #macosx channel on the freenode irc network. Users ‘frogor’ and ‘CPng|N’ both suggested that the problem could really be due to the router.

So i fired up the admin panel of my Philips router(model number SNA6500/18). I saw in the logs that the local ip of my computer was sending a lot of unanswered ‘SYN’ traffic to the ip’s of the websites that didn’t work. Google told me that this is normal, the tcp/ip stack of osx uses an option flag that causes this. Anyway, this ‘SYN Flood’ required a lot of tcp sessions and my router limited (and aborted) them, so the connections just timed out.

Long story short, on the router admin panel: Advanced Settings > Firewall > Intrusion Detection > Maximum Incomplete TCP/UDP sessions per host
change that value from 10 to 50 and you’re done.

Today i noticed that the Apple Trailers page doesn’t let you play their videos on a GNU/Linux system by default. GStreamer couldn’t open the links to the .mov files that i found in the source code of the webpage, nor could VLC Player. Seems that Apple checks for the QuickTime User Agent string.

This means, unless GStreamer Plugin can fake that User Agent, we will have to go for a less user-friendly workaround. I downloaded the trailer i wanted to see using Wget with the -U flag to change the User Agent.

Go to the apple trailer you want to download, and copy the link to the .mov file by right clicking on the (failing) Gstreamer plugin on that page and chosing ‘copy’. Alternatively you can just go browse the source and find the .mov file there.

Now open up a terminal and type this:

wget -U QuickTime/7.6.6 http://trailers.apple.com/the-link-to-your-trailer-goes-here.mov

now you can play it using VLC Player, or your favorite video player (if it supports .mov files)

That’s it!
you could also automate the process by using a greasemonkey script or a bash script as you please…
EDIT: hack, i made one for you! It’s a php script that downloads the trailer to your home/Downloads folder.
1. download the script, rename it ‘TrailerDownloader.php’ and put it in your home folder.
2. Go to the apple trailers page and choose a trailer you want to watch (click a movie poster). Then copy the url of the page.
3. Open up a terminal (make sure you got php5, php-curl, and php-cli installed) and type

php TrailerDownloader.php http://trailers.apple.com/the-url-of-the-trailer-page-goes-here
and press enter.
4. You’ll be presented with all possible trailer downloads for that movie, pick a number. Then hit the up arrow on your keyboard, and add a space and the trailer number to the end of the command. like this:

php TrailerDownloader.php http://trailers.apple.com/the-url-of-the-trailer-page-goes-here 3

5. Hit enter and wait. The trailer will be downloaded to your Downloads folder.

The start-up sound on Ubuntu and Trisquel GNU/Linux really makes me sick. So i was looking to replace it with a sound of my own or just shut it up if that wasn’t possible. Seems both options are quite easy to do. After some poking around i found that the sound is invoked by the ‘startup applications’.

System > Preferences > Startup Applications

You will get a list with all applications that will run when GNOME loads. Find ‘GNOME Login Sound’ in that list, click it, and then click ‘Edit’.

You now see the command for the login sound. It looks like this:

/usr/bin/canberra-gtk-play --id="desktop-login" --description="GNOME Login"

To change the login sound to a sound of your own, put your audio file (in OGG format!) in this folder (you need root access):

/usr/share/sounds/ubuntu/stereo

and change the command in in the GNOME Login Sound window to

/usr/bin/canberra-gtk-play --id="YOURFILENAMEHERE" --description="GNOME Login"

Make sure you replace the YOURFILENAMEHERE placeholder with the filename of your audio file, without the .ogg extension.

To adjust the volume of the sound, add this to the command string:

-V 0

where 0 is the loudest possible value, and -100 is very silent (you will not hear it)

Lately i’ve been learning a lot about using the command line on GNU/Linux and Mac OSX based systems. I wanted to go further in this, and try to do some daily internet things from an all command line GNU/Linux distribution. For this purpose i used ArchLinux.

After a little research i found ‘lynx‘. It’s a great text-based web-browser. It takes little time to learn how it works, and it’s really quite usable as a browser. It uses colors to show links, italic, bold and other fonts. You can find a screenshot of my blog displayed by lynx here.

To download a file, you can use the lynx built-in Save To Disk option, or you can use a cli download manager like wget.

After the webbrowsing, it was time to find a suitable chat client. CenterIM seemed perfect. It’s easy to set up and use. It can handle multiple protocols, like MSN, Yim, ICQ, IRC, Google Talk,… The client works fine. So far, so good.

When looking for a suitable (and working) e-mail client, things got a lot more complicated. It seems that there is no easy way to do this, so i did it the hard way. I used a combination of 4 programs and 1 cronjob to do this. ‘Fetchmail‘ gets the mail off the server through POP3, sends it to ‘Procmail‘. Procmail filters the incoming mail and puts it in one or more text files. I automated this process with a cronjob, so my mail is downloaded every half hour. To read those mails, i used ‘Mutt‘, an easy to use mail program, from which you can also compose new mails. Then they are sent to ‘mSMTP‘, a program that relays your outgoing mail back to the mailserver, to send it to the recipient.
Setting up all these programs to work together to send and receive mails involves a lot of fiddling with configuration files (not for the faint hearted), but when it works, it’s really cool

So! i succeeded in doing these things from the command line… mission completed

All too often, when you need to download a big file that somebody shared with you over a free file host like rapidshare, you find that they used HJSplit (Windows / Linux) or Split&Concat (Mac Equivalent) to split the big file in smaller parts so they can bypass the file size limit on those free hosts.

It was a pain for me to deal with them, because i refused to install one of mentionned and not-so-professional-looking, closed source programs to ‘concat’ the files again.

Now i found out that if you’re using GNU/Linux or Mac OSX you already have the tools to split and concat right under the hood of your operating system!

to split a large file called ‘bigfile.mkv’ into 100MB parts, type this in the terminal:

split -b 100m -d -a 3 bigfile.mkv output.mkv.

* -b 100m: 100MB parts
* -d: use numeric suffixes (doesn’t work on Mac OSX)
* -a 3: use 3 suffix characters
* output.mkv. : output filename. don’t forget the trailing dot (.)
-> in Mac OSX, the -d option doesn’t work, so the split command only provides .aaa, .aab, etc. names.
-> you’ll need to rename all files to use .001 instead of .000 or .aaa extensions as the first archive file (and increasing names for the other files) to be compatible with HJSplit.

to concat bigfile.mkv.001, bigfile.mkv.002, and bigfile.mkv.003 to the original file, type this in the terminal:

cat bigfile.mkv.001 bigfile.mkv.002 bigfile.mkv.003 > bigfile.mkv

- make sure you respect the order of files! (first 001, then 002, etc…)

that’s it!

I was looking for a good, open source, and easy to use alternative for Finale and Sibelius that i could use on both my Mac and Ubuntu installations to do my music notations.
At first i was stuck with the not-so-comprehensive Lilypond music notation software. I thought “there must be a better alternative, where i can use WYSIWYG editing mode” and yes, that existed in Musescore.
There are packages available for Mac OSX, Linux and Windows and source.
The program is very intuitive to use, if you ever used finale or sibelius before. All functions you need are there. Also there are numerous export formats supported, like lilypond, musicXML, pdf, png and a lot of others.

strongly recommended!

There are two possible scenario’s.
1. You are running Ubuntu natively (or via Boot Camp) on your Mac, and you can’t get the iSight to work with Ubuntu.
2. You are running Ubuntu in a virtual machine using VMWare, Parallells, or VirtualBox, and you can’t get the iSight to work with Ubuntu.

both scenario’s are a pain in the ass, AND both scenarios have a really simple solution.

STEP 0. foolproof: if you’re trying to use your iSight in a virtual machine, make sure your vm software links the camera to the virtual machine!

STEP 1. get the AppleUSBVideoSupport file. you can find that file on an existing Mac OSX 10.4 or 10.5 installation at this location:

/System/Library/Extensions/IOUSBFamily.kext/Contents/PlugIns/AppleUSBVideoSupport.kext/Contents/MacOS/AppleUSBVideoSupport

or you can download it from here. (unzip this first)

STEP 2. Put the AppleUSBVideoSupport file on your Ubuntu Desktop.

STEP 3. Open a terminal window on Ubuntu, and update your repositories:

sudo apt-get update

then install the iSight Firmware Tools like this:

sudo apt-get install isight-firmware-tools

STEP 4. The installer will ask you for the AppleUSBVideoSupport file. give it the right path to that file:

/home/**yourusername**/Desktop/AppleUSBVideoSupport

STEP 5. Reboot or log out and log back in. You can now use your iSight with Ubuntu!

Recently i visited www.whattheinternetknowsaboutyou.com, a site where you can see your complete browsing history… which means that -if they want to- THEY can see your browsing history too. That’s not too bad, you think? You know EVERY SITE can see that, and a few things more.

- your IP adress (so also your location on the planet)
- the site that directed you to that page (referrer)
- your complete web-browsing history
- the browser you’re using (in the user-agent string)
- the Operating System you’re using (in the user-agent string)

and that’s all no big deal really, it’s easy as 1-2-3. Now you say “so what? they don’t know who i am”. Exactly. They don’t. But they don’t need to know your name! The information they have right here is more than enough to uniquely identify you out of billions of other internet users. So don’t you think that’s concerning?

Anyway, IF you want a little bit of privacy on the web, here’s how i hid all these aspects in an easy way, using Ubuntu 10.04 and Firefox, combined with TOR, and a bunch of Firefox plugins.

STEP 1. Install TOR on Ubuntu. you find the how-to here – use ‘Option two’. By using tor in combination with Polipo(see step 2) we’re going to hide our location and ip adress.

STEP 2. Check if Polipo is installed on your Ubuntu system. (It was automatically installed during my TOR installation). if not, install it. Then go here – Download the Polipo configuration for TOR file (in step two), and follow the instructions in the same paragraph.

STEP 3. We’re going to install some add-ons in Firefox now. First is the ‘Torbutton‘. Without it, TOR doesn’t work with Firefox. go here – and install the add-on by clicking the green ‘+Add to Firefox’ button.

STEP 4. Install the ‘No referrer‘ add-on for Firefox here – this little tool is going to hide our referrer page.

STEP 5. Install the ‘User Agent Switcher‘ add-on for Firefox here – this tool switches our user agent so websites we visit can’t see that we’re using Firefox on Ubuntu (and more info..)

STEP 6. Install the ‘Adblock Plus‘ add-on fore Firefox here – this will block ads on webpages. We need that because ads tend to find around the tor software, and have our real ip and location compromised.

STEP 7. Quit Firefox, and do a complete restart of Ubuntu. Then restart Firefox. you’ll see that a bunch of pages opens because we installed the new add-ons. We need to do a few more things.

STEP 8. A page of Adblock Plus will be opened, asking to install a filter description. Choose one that seems ok to you. After that you can close the remaining pages.

STEP 9. choose another user agent.
'Tools' > 'Default User Agent' > 'Internet Explorer' > 'Internet Explorer 7'
might be a good choice.

STEP 10. Click the green ‘R’ icon on the right bottom of your screen. In the menu that pops up check the box before ‘Don’t send referrers to any URL‘ and save.

STEP 11. Click the tor button on the right bottom of the screen to switch TOR on and off.

STEP 12. To disable the history leaking, just disable the history (in Firefox preferences), or choose ‘clear history when Firefox closes’. that way you won’t have much to worry about.

now you’re set. remember. for normal browsing, you don’t need to do all this this is just for the paranoid. Still, try not to use the tor network, the user agent switcher and the referrer disabler when it’s not needed. these things were made to make the web better. some people just use them for the wrong purpose.

enjoy the privacy

I used ffmpeg a lot lately, and you could already read about that in my previous posts about capturing your screen and converting aiff to mp3 using ffmpeg.

When creating a DVD for a school project I needed to do some movie work, and i of course did use ffmpeg for that. Here are some handy commands that i used:

extract the part of the movie starting from 01:46

ffmpeg -i filename.mp4 -ss 00:01:46 -sameq outfile.mp4

extract the part of the movie until 05:30

ffmpeg -i filename.mp4 -t 00:05:30 -sameq outfile.mp4

take an image and an audio file and put them together as a movie file

ffmpeg -f image2 -i input.jpg -i input.mp3 -ab 128k outfile.mp4

take a huge mov file and create a web-compatible mp4 file out if it, with lower bitrate.

ffmpeg -i filename.mov -ab 128k -b 800k outfile.mp4

transform a flash movie to mp4, keep the quality/bitrate equal to the original

ffmpeg -i filename.flv -f mp4 -vcodec mpeg4 -sameq outfile.mp4

capture your favourite online radio stream, and save it in mp3 format on your hard disk, time limited to 2 hours (7200 sec)

ffmpeg -i http://mp3.streampower.be/stubru-high.mp3 -f mp3 -acodec libmp3lame -ab 128k -ar 44100 -t 7200 outfile.mp3

that’s it

Capturing your screen can be quite useful if you need to explain something to another computer user. With the ffmpeg program that you can find in the Synaptic Package Manager on Ubuntu, it’s easy to grab your screen and make a movie file of what happens on it.

Make sure ffmpeg is installed. Then open a terminal and write this command:

ffmpeg -f x11grab -r 25 -s 1280x800 -i :0.0 -sameq Desktop/out.mp4

- instead of
1280x800
you put your own screen resolution
- instead of
Desktop/out.mp4
you put the directory and filename of your choice

Press enter, and you’re capturing your screen! To stop, press q.

That’s how easy it is to grab your screen on Ubuntu.

Some time ago I bought a new harddisk, and I wanted to be able to use it on my Mac, on my Linux box and on my brother’s Windows computer. So I started looking for the right filesystem to format the drive to. Default Max OSX HD formatting is HFS+ with journaling enabled, but that doesn’t work on Windows. Default Windows formatting is NTFS, but on a mac, you don’t have write access to the disk. The default on linux is ext3 or ext4 which are both not easy to access on Windows or Mac OSX. After some thinking, I found that USB sticks work flawlessly on these three operating systems. So I decided to format my external HD the same way a USB stick is formatted, being the old FAT32. The problem is that if you’re on a Mac or on a Windows computer, there is no way to make that happen for large drives, so i had to move to my Ubuntu box.

For this action there is a perfect gnome tool available, called GParted. Install it using your favourite software manager. Then connect your external HD to your computer. (make sure you have a backup available if there are files on it)
1 – Open GParted (System > Administration > GParted/Partition Editor).

2 – In GParted you can now select your device (GParted > Devices > yourdevice). You then get a graphical representation of the formatting of that device.

3 – Create a partition table (Device > Create Partition Table) and delete the partitions you don’t need anymore.

4 – Create a new partition, make it as big as your harddisk, choose fat32/vfat as filesystem, and give it a label.

5 – Now check if everything looks ok, and press the ok button to apply changes.

6 – Done! You can now mount your new partition.

Saved by the mighty Ubuntu GNU/Linux once more!

Toon

PS: note that there’s a 4GB limitation on file size when using FAT32.
PS2: the labels on your partitions will be uppercase. If you want mixed-case labels, like ‘LaCie’ or something, you can use this command instead of step 4:

sudo mkfs.msdos -n LaCie /dev/sdb1

in which you substitute ‘LaCie’ with the label you want, and ‘sdb1′ with the right partition name.

Log out and log back in again.

You now have shiny effects enabled. You can set transparency per window:

transset 0.7

Then click the window you want to set to this opacity value.

you can automate this by creating launchers on your desktop or in a gnome panel, to make a window transparent or opaque. For instance, i have a launcher for transparent (
transset 0.5
) and a launcher for opaque (
transset 1
)

I have problems with my WiFi, since… ever. The signal is too weak here in my room, because the router is too far away. Anyway. This is 10 minutes work to create an aimed antenna for your WiFi signal. The radiowaves are reflected by a metal parabolic shape. The turorial tells you how to make the antenna in 10 minutes, and it really works. I have almost 10% better reception now.

In Mac OSX, there’s a very nice built-in speech synthesis program. Some people know it from a skype function that says whitch of your contacts comes online. You can also make your computer read the time out loud for you, at certain intervals.
Anyway. The coolest thing is to make your computer say things you want to hear.

Open a terminal, and type this:

say "please hit that return key once more"

now that’s cool. but more interesting is that you can save that sound to an aiff (apple lossless audio) file.

say -o Desktop/myspeech.aiff "please hit that return key once more"

or you can make it read a txt document for you, and again save the output to an aiff file…

say -o Desktop/myspeech.aiff -f Desktop/myspeech.txt

click here for an audio sample!

have fun!

A few days ago i created a nice ASCII art php script. I was taking a break from work and i was looking around on the internet for nice ascii art. I saw a wegpage where someone let a script create stars of a certain magnitude. I made a command line script that does the same thing for fun.

for input 1, it gives you this:

for input 2, it gives you this:

etc… it’s quite fun

you find the script here

to run it, remove the .txt from the end of the filename, open a terminal, and then type this:

php Desktop/stars.php 3

ofcourse, change ‘Desktop’ to the dir where you put it. instead of the 3 type any number below 10

you will need php-cli installed to run this. (installed on Mac OSX by default)

I love to test new GNU/Linux distributions. Some time ago i was playing around with Trisquel GNU/Linux, a very nice linux distro. The main goal of that distribution is to have ONLY free software in there, and to have a complete and good OS at the same time.

Now, as we all know, flash is a big issue on Linux systems. The complete open solution to play flash videos is Gnash, the GNU flash player. That is also the flash player you can install on Trisquel. I had some problems viewing youtube videos though, but i found out that the embed player did work! So i made a greasemonkey script to replace the default youtube video player by the ‘embed’ player. here it is:

<del datetime="2010-04-26T10:31:20+00:00">click here for the script</del> (version1)
click here for the script (version2)

You’ll need Firefox, IceCat or IceWeasel (completely free versions of Firefox) or Abrowser (UI-stripped and completely Free Software version of Firefox) with the add-on ‘GreaseMonkey‘ for this to work.

Everyone needs to make backups. Some people copy their most important files to an external hard disk or DVD, others use automated software to do the job for them. Many Mac OSX users use Time Machine, Apple’s backup application. I think i don’t have enough control when i use it. So i started looking for a program that did what i wanted it to do, make incremental backups from folders that i chose, and have the option to exclude files or folders from the backup.

Rsync, a command line (cli) program that’s installed by default on almost all UNIX based operating systems (so also Mac OSX and a whole lot of GNU/Linux distro’s), does the job quite good for me.

rsync -avzru /Volumes/LACIE/ /Volumes/LaCie\ 1 --exclude "/Applications/**" --exclude ".*" --exclude ".*/" --exclude ".*/**"

that’s what i type in the terminal.

rsync is the program.

-avzru means ‘archive’, ‘verbose’ (more output to the command line), ‘compress’ (use compression to decrease traffic if you use rsync over a network), ‘recursive’ (go into all folders), ‘update’ (don’t overwrite newer files)

/Volumes/LACIE/ this is the source external hard disk (notice the “/” at the end!)

/Volumes/LaCie\ 1 this is the destination external hard disk. It’s called ‘LaCie 1′, and the backslash is there to see the space as part of the path. (notice that there is no “/” at the end)

–exclude “/Applications/**” here i exclude the folder ‘Applications’ from the backup

–exclude “.*” –exclude “.*/” –exclude “.*/**” also exclude all hidden files and folders

that’s it
